COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Janauary 28 (ePRESS) – Brothers Thehan Wijemanne and Methvan Wijemanne continued their impressive rise in Sri Lankan tennis by winning the Men’s Doubles title at the YETI SSC Open Tennis Championships 2026, worked off at the SSC Tennis Courts, Maitland Place, Colombo.
Displaying calm teamwork, quick movement and sharp control at the net, the Wijemanne brothers defeated Ganuka Fernando and Rehan Gunawardhene 7/6, 7/1 in the final. The straight-sets victory highlighted their growing understanding as a doubles pair and their ability to handle pressure at key moments.
Both brothers are products of Royal College, Colombo. Thehan Wijemanne, a former Royalist, is a former national champion and a Sri Lanka Davis Cup player, while his younger brother Methvan Wijemanne is a current Royal College player who continues to show steady improvement at senior level.
The Wijemanne brothers reached the final after beating Delvan Herath and Ashen Silva 6/3, 6/4 in the semi-final. Their scientific approach, built on accurate serving, solid baseline play and well-timed volleys, helped them control rallies and close out important points.
The tournament also produced a rare and historic moment in the Men’s Open Singles event. For the first time in the history of the championship, two brothers met in a men’s singles semi-final, with Thehan facing Methvan in a unique family clash. Thehan emerged victorious and went on to win the final, completing a memorable singles and doubles double at the same tournament.
Thehan’s success at the YETI SSC Open adds to his strong record at this event. He won the Men’s Open Singles title in 2022 and 2026, having missed the singles competition from 2023 to 2025 due to overseas commitments and vacation. In doubles, he won the title in 2022 and 2023 with Chaturya Nilaweera, reached the final in 2024 with Methvan but had to leave without playing the final, did not compete in 2025, and returned strongly in 2026 to win the title with his younger brother.
