Yuhansa Peiris announces arrival with dominant ITF title run

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Feb 20 (ePRESS) – Fifteen-year-old Yuhansa Peiris produced a dazzling run to capture her first ever ITF junior title when she defeated Aaraa Aasaal Azim of the Maldives 6-3, 6-3 in the Girls’ Singles final of the ITF J30 Colombo, February Week 4 tournament at the courts of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association in Colombo.

The young Bishop’s College star showed remarkable maturity beyond her age as she controlled the final from the baseline, striking clean winners and maintaining steady pressure throughout the one-hour contest. With this triumph, Peiris announced herself as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest emerging tennis prospects on the international junior circuit.

Peiris’ road to the title was nothing short of impressive. In the semi-finals, she overcame Japan’s Akari Oda 6-4, 6-1 in a dominant performance where she dictated play with aggressive groundstrokes and strong serving.

Earlier in the quarter-finals, the Sri Lankan youngster staged a brave comeback to defeat Ukraine’s Daria Lokotkova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 after dropping the first set. She displayed fighting spirit and tactical discipline to turn the match around.

In the second round, Peiris beat Ai Shin Huang of Taipei 7-6, 6-2, showing composure in the crucial tie-break before raising her level in the second set.

Meanwhile, Aaraa Aasaal Azim had reached the final after edging out Hong Kong’s Chiu Kwan Nina Wang 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 in a hard-fought semi-final.

For Peiris, this maiden ITF championship marks a significant milestone in her young career. At just 15, she has proven that she possesses both the skill and the mental strength to compete at international level, giving Sri Lankan tennis fresh hope for the future.
