Binura Thalagala Smashes 200m IM Record at Inter-International Schools Championship

3 Meet Records Shattered at 28th Inter-International Schools Swim Championship

On the opening day of the 28th Inter-International Schools Swimming Championship at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool, Binura Thalagala from Lyceum International School Nugegoda set up a new meet record in the Under-20 Boys 200m Individual Medley. The championship, hosted by the Asian International School, witnessed a total of three new meet records Friday.

Binura, who participated in the World Junior Aquatics earlier this year, clocked an impressive 2:18.22, erasing the previous record of 2:18.24 held by Anusara Abeygoonawardana from the last edition. Both Binura and Anusara are training partners at Killer Whale Aquatics.

In another remarkable feat, Chanudi Kumarapperuma of Lyceum International School Nugegoda established a new meet record in the Under-16 Girls 50m Butterfly, finishing in 30.36 seconds. This surpassed the previous record of 30.57 seconds set by Nesha Ratnayake last year. Additionally, Vishalini John of Asian International School also outshone the previous record, clocking 30.56 seconds.

The event number one saw Sanumi Nehansa of Lyceum International School Panadura break a five-year record in the Under-10 Girls 200m Individual Medley. Nehansa completed the race in 3:17.88, surpassing the previous meet record of 3:20.12 set by Thenushi Kalavitigoda in 2017.

The championship’s second and final day is set to commence at 7:30 AM at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Saturday.
