COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – Making a triumphant return after a year-long pause, Rukshika Wijesooriya defeated defending champion Saajida Razick 2-1 in the Women’s Singles Open Final of the ongoing 109th Colombo Tennis Championship. Sponsored by Vision Care, the final played on the hard court at Queen’s Club in Colombo.
Wijesooriya faced an early setback, losing the first set 4-6 to Razick. Undeterred, she mounted a remarkable comeback, winning the next two sets convincingly with scores of 6-0 and 6-2. This victory marks her first Colombo Championship title in her career.
In the semifinals, the 25-year-old Wijesooriya displayed her dominance by defeating 17-year-old Hasali Gajaba from Visakha Vidyalaya in straight sets of 6-3 and 6-3.
“This victory is significant for me, especially after returning to competitive tennis following a one-year break,” said Wijesooriya. “Saajida Razick played very well, and the final was a tough match with three intense sets.”
Wijesooriya, looking ahead, is a key member of Sri Lanka’s team for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled from July 15 to 20.
“I am currently focused on my preparations for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup,” added Wijesooriya, reflecting on her future in the sport.
