KINGSTON, June 11 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka will rely heavily on their bowling attack to counter the explosive batting power of West Indies when the two sides meet in the opening Twenty20 International at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, with the hosts starting as clear favourites despite concerns over the weather.
The match is under threat from rain, with thunderstorms forecast earlier in the day. However, conditions are expected to improve by the scheduled start time, raising hopes that the first game of the three-match series will go ahead.
While the recent ODI series was badly affected by rain, the T20 format is expected to provide a much sterner challenge for Sri Lanka against a West Indies team renowned for its aggressive batting.
The Caribbean side have built a strong reputation in T20 cricket over the years and came close to reaching the latter stages of the recent T20 World Cup. Their batting line-up boasts several dangerous power-hitters capable of changing a match within a few overs.
Players such as Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford and Jason Holder give West Indies a formidable batting unit that can dominate on home conditions.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to their bowlers to level the contest.
Wanindu Hasaranga remains one of Sri Lanka’s key match-winners in the shortest format and has enjoyed remarkable success in the Caribbean. In four T20 bowling innings in the West Indies, the leg-spinner has claimed ten wickets at an outstanding economy rate of just 4.18.
Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has also impressed during the tour and will be expected to lead the pace attack alongside Nuwan Thushara and likely debutant Eshan Malinga, who earned praise for his performances in the Indian Premier League.
Hasaranga will have a crucial role to play as Sri Lanka seek to contain the powerful West Indies batting line-up and provide breakthroughs in the middle overs.
West Indies will also look for a strong return from Hetmyer, who struggled during the recent IPL season. The left-hander was one of the team’s standout performers at the T20 World Cup and will be eager to rediscover that form on home soil.
Sri Lanka may continue experimenting with Kamindu Mendis at the top of the order alongside Pathum Nissanka, while captain Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka are expected to strengthen the middle order.
The visitors will also decide between spin-bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage and seam-bowling all-rounder Milan Rathnayake depending on the pitch conditions.
Although West Indies hold a slight edge in recent meetings, the rivalry has remained closely contested. Since 2020, West Indies have won five of the nine T20 Internationals played between the two teams, while Sri Lanka have won four, including two of their last three encounters.
Adding further interest to the contest, this will be the first-ever T20 International between Sri Lanka and West Indies to be played in Jamaica.
For Sri Lanka, the challenge will be clear: stop the West Indies power-hitters and give their batters a platform to compete. If Hasaranga, Chameera and the bowling unit can produce early breakthroughs, the visitors could make life difficult for the favourites in what promises to be an exciting start to the series.
