COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – Asian International School (AIS) recently hosted the 29th Inter-International School Swimming Championship (IISSC) at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Complex in Colombo, marking a defining moment in Sri Lanka’s competitive swimming backdrop. The event, held over two days, saw 874 swimmers from 21 leading international schools across the country compete in a high-class, SLASU-recognized competition.
Sponsored by FONDRE, the flagship brand of Pyramid Wilmar (Pvt) Ltd, the championship has become one of Sri Lanka’s premier international school swimming events. The AIS organizing committee, led by the school’s sports-loving Principal, Harshana Perera, and Head of Sports, Ms. Nihara Bagoos, ensured the event was executed to the highest standard.
Throughout the two-day tournament, the swimmers pushed themselves to new heights, with 11 new meet records established. AIS’s own star swimmer, Christina Perumal, made an impact by breaking a 14-year-old record in the Girls Under-20 100m Breastroke, further cementing her place as one of the top swimmers in the country.
“This event has been a huge success, not only in terms of the competition but also in terms of the sportsmanship and spirit displayed by all participants,” Ms. Bagoos remarked. “We are proud to have hosted such a prestigious event and to have provided these young swimmers with a chance to excel.”
AIS’s swimming team also returned home with an impressive haul of 20 medals, displaying the depth of talent within the school. The team’s outstanding performance added another chapter to AIS’s legacy as a school that has already produced three Olympic swimmers.
“We are incredibly proud of our swimmers and the team behind this event. The support from our sponsors, FONDRE, and the dedication of our staff, have all contributed to making this competition a huge success,” Head of Sports Ms. Nihara Bagoos said.
In addition to the success of the competition itself, AIS’s exceptional hospitality did not go unnoticed. Both parents and schools praised the AIS staff, prefects, Sports Captains and students for their warm and welcoming atmosphere. The attention to detail in the organization of the event, as well as the graciousness shown towards visitors, further highlighted AIS’s commitment to excellence both in and out of the pool.
As one of the top swimming competitions on Sri Lanka’s swimming calendar, the 29th Inter-International School Swimming Championship not only highlighted the talent of young swimmers but also displayed the critical role AIS plays in promoting the sport and developing future champions.
