COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – At just 14 years old, Yuhansa Peiris has already made a name for herself in Sri Lanka’s tennis court, proving that age is no barrier to achieving greatness. A student of Bishop’s College, Yuhansa has become one of the youngest players to claim top honours in Grade 1 tournaments and Super Series events, setting the stage for an even brighter future in the sport.
In 2024 alone, Yuhansa’s performance has been nothing short of remarkable. Competing in the country’s most challenging tennis tournaments, she clinched victories that many seasoned players would envy. In the Grade 1 SSC Championship, she was the U14 Singles winner and finished as the U16 Singles runner-up. At the Colombo Championship, she emerged as the U16 Singles winner that sets champions apart.
The Super Series tournaments were also no match for this young prodigy. At the Sri Lanka Nationals, she dominated both the U16 and U14 Singles categories. Her success continued at the Grade 1 Hard Court Nationals, where she triumphed in both the U16 and U18 Singles categories.
Adding to her outstanding achievements, Yuhansa also claimed victory at the ATF U16 tournament held in Colombo in November, a major milestone in her young career. These victories have not only earned her recognition locally but also positioned her as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising tennis talents on the international court.
Behind Yuhansa’s meteoric rise are two key figures who have been instrumental in her development. Her coach, Niranjan Cassie Chetty, is a seasoned trainer with a track record of producing top national champions. Under his guidance, Yuhansa has honed her skills, refined her technique, and learned the importance of mental resilience. Chetty’s expert coaching has been crucial in shaping her into the formidable player she is today.
Yuhansa’s fitness coach, Jaliya Yasarathne, has played a vital role in her physical development. Known for training some of the country’s top tennis players, Yasarathne has pushed Yuhansa to her limits, ensuring that she remains strong, fit, and capable of competing against older and more physically advanced opponents. His training has given her the stamina and strength required to dominate the court, even against players much older than her.
In 2025, Yuhansa aims to take another major step in her career by joining the Billie Jean Junior Team. Having won all her matches at the trials, she stands as a top contender for the team and is poised to represent Sri Lanka on the international court. This year, Yuhansa will now have the opportunity to compete in the women’s category, a milestone she eagerly anticipates.
Bishop’s College has been a crucial part of her journey, with Principal Ms. Chemali Herath offering her unwavering support. The principal, along with her teachers, has been a constant source of encouragement, ensuring that Yuhansa has the resources and backing she needs to continue excelling in her tennis career.
