COLOMBO, July 7, 2026 (ePRESS) – Seventeen-year-old Saha Kapilasena will take the biggest step of his young tennis career when he makes his Davis Cup debut for Sri Lanka at the 2026 Asia/Oceania Group IV tournament in Colombo from July 22 to 25, earning his national call-up after steady progress on the international junior circuit.
The young Sri Lankan will step into senior international team tennis for the first time when the seven-nation promotion battle gets underway at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts.
For Saha, the call-up is both a reward and a challenge.
At just 17, he has made steady progress on the ITF junior circuit and has already shown that he can deliver on the international stage. His growing experience, fighting spirit and ability to play doubles have helped him earn a place in the national squad.
Saha has also tasted international success alongside fellow youngster Ganuka Fernando, with the pair combining to win an ITF junior doubles title.
That success could prove valuable in the Davis Cup, where doubles can often turn the tide of a close tie.
Team tennis demands more than individual skill. Communication, trust and the ability to perform under pressure are vital, and Saha’s junior doubles experience has already given him an early taste of those demands.
But the Davis Cup will be a different ball game.
The pressure will be greater, the opponents will be stronger and every point could carry the hopes of the entire team. A single break of serve or one tie-break can decide the fate of a country in a promotion battle.
For Saha, however, the tournament is also a golden opportunity.
He enters the competition without the heavy burden of past results. As a newcomer, he has everything to gain and a chance to play fearless tennis if called upon.
Young players can often bring fresh energy to a team. They are hungry to prove themselves, ready to learn and willing to fight for every point.
Saha will also have the valuable experience of training and competing alongside senior national players. The chance to watch how experienced campaigners prepare for important matches, handle pressure and recover from difficult moments could play a major role in his development.
His selection also sends an important message about the future of Sri Lankan tennis.
Moving from junior tennis to the senior international stage is never easy, especially for a 17-year-old. Many promising players struggle to bridge that gap. The Davis Cup gives Saha a valuable chance to test himself in a tougher environment and learn what is required at the next level.
Home conditions could also help him settle into the challenge.
The familiar courts, Colombo weather and support of the home crowd could give Saha confidence as Sri Lanka fight for promotion against Qatar, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, Turkmenistan and the Northern Mariana Islands.
The seven teams will be divided into two pools, with the two pool winners earning direct promotion to Asia/Oceania Group III. The second-placed teams will then meet in a high-pressure play-off for the third and final promotion place.
That demanding format means there will be little room for mistakes.
Every match will matter and every member of the squad could have a role to play during four days of intense competition.
For Saha, July 22 could mark the beginning of an important new chapter.
A Davis Cup call-up is more than another tournament appearance. It is a chance to wear the national colours, stand beside the country’s best players and carry Sri Lanka’s hopes onto the court.
Saha has earned that opportunity through his steady rise in junior tennis.
Now comes the bigger test.
On home courts and in front of Sri Lankan supporters, 17-year-old Saha Kapilasena has the chance to take his first steps in Davis Cup tennis and show that he could be part of the country’s tennis future for years to come.
