Doha, February 13, 1PM – Sri Lankan swimmer Ganga Senevirathne excelled at the World Championship in Doha on Monday by swimming the fastest South Asian time in the women’s 100m Backstroke event.
Competing against top athletes from around the globe, Senevirathne, a student of Visakha Vidyalaya, clocked an impressive 1:04.93, securing her place as the top swimmer in South Asia.
Senevirathne’s remarkable performance surpassed her Indian counterpart, Suvana Chetana Baskar, who clocked 1:05.26 in the heats. Despite facing challenges in the past six months to regain her peak form from early 2023, Senevirathne expressed her delight at achieving this milestone, stating, “This was a much-needed personal win for me.”
Accompanying Senevirathne in representing Sri Lanka at the World Championship are fellow swimmers Akalanka Peiris, Kyle Abeysinghe, and Hiruki de Silva. The championship, which concludes on February 18.
