TORONTO, June 21, 2026 (ePRESS) – Substitute Deniz Undav struck twice in the second half as Germany fought back from a goal down to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday and secure a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2014.

Undav came off the bench to rescue the four-time champions in a dramatic Group E clash at Toronto Stadium, scoring in the 68th minute before netting a stoppage-time winner to send Germany through to the last 32 with six points from two matches.

Germany dominated possession and created several chances but found themselves trailing at half-time after Franck Kessie fired Ivory Coast ahead following a rebound from an Amad Diallo effort.

The Germans had earlier seen two goals ruled out by the referee, with Aleksandar Pavlovic and Jamal Musiala both denied after VAR interventions and foul decisions.

Despite the setbacks, Julian Nagelsmann’s side maintained their composure and increased the pressure after the break.

Their persistence paid off in the 68th minute when Undav controlled a cross and volleyed home the equaliser to bring Germany level.

Ivory Coast had an opportunity to snatch victory late on when Simon Adingra broke into the penalty area, but Germany survived the scare before launching a swift counterattack.

Deep into stoppage time, Undav received a pass with his back to goal, turned sharply and unleashed a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to complete a remarkable comeback.

“The boys invested a lot. I’m very happy for the whole team,” Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said after the match.

Germany’s Jonathan Tah praised the impact of the substitutes, saying Undav was outstanding and brought fresh energy to the side.

The defeat left Ivory Coast on three points and delayed their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

“We wanted to make history today, but everything was a little tight,” said Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo.

Germany will complete their Group E campaign against Ecuador in New Jersey, while Ivory Coast face Curacao in Philadelphia. (ePRESS)
