In a groundbreaking moment for Sri Lankan sports, Hashan Seneviratne is gearing up to be the first-ever Sri Lankan baseball player to step onto the field in the renowned professional Franchise League tournament organized by United Baseball in Dubai. The excitement is building as the event is set to unfold at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on November 24 and 25.

Securing a remarkable contract with United East, Seneviratne has etched his name in history as the first Sri Lankan to achieve such a feat in the Baseball United All-Star League. This unique league showcases two teams, United East and United West, battling it out in an all-star spectacle with a substantial cash prize up for grabs.

Fans will recognize Seneviratne from his standout performances representing the Sri Lanka National Team in the Western Asian Baseball Championship earlier this year. His journey began in 2018 when he was first selected for the Under-18 Sri Lanka National Team. Hailing from Wewalawewa Maha Vidyalaya in Dambulla, Seneviratne played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s fifth-place finish in the Asian Baseball Championship held in Japan in the same year.

One of the defining moments of his career came during that championship when Seneviratne’s incredible catch made waves, earning him headlines in Japanese newspapers and widespread recognition in Japan. This international acclaim has set him apart on the global stage.

The United All-Star League boasts a star-studded lineup with professional baseball players from powerhouse nations like the USA, including athletes from Major League Baseball (MLB), the world’s premier franchise baseball tournament where multimillion-dollar contracts are the norm.

For Seneviratne, this tournament is a golden opportunity to compete with top-notch athletes in a world-class atmosphere. The organizers have extended invitations to eight players from the Indian-subcontinent region, comprising three players from India, three from Pakistan, one from Sri Lanka (Seneviratne himself), and one from Uganda.

Seneviratne’s consistent stellar performance caught the eye of the Sri Lanka National Baseball Federation, leading to his selection as the country’s representative. The selection process involved rigorous evaluations, including video assessments and a review of past tournament performances.

Notably, the organizers were present at the West Asian Baseball Championship held in Islamabad, Pakistan, in March this year. The tournament saw the participation of seven countries, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Palestine.

As Seneviratne steps onto the field in Dubai, the eyes of the nation will be on him, cheering for this trailblazing Sri Lankan athlete aiming to hit a home run in the global baseball arena.
