Doha, Feb 14, 11.10AM – In Doha, our very own National Champion, Hiruki de Silva, made an impact at the ongoing World Aquatic Championship. She swam the fastest time recorded by a South Asian swimmer in the women’s 200m Freestyle, also achieving her personal best.

De Silva swam her heart out, finishing with a remarkable time of 2 minutes and 10 seconds, a personal best for her. This achievement not only surpassed her previous personal best but also outpaced India’s Dhinidhi Desinghu, who clocked 2:10.41 in the heats.

Although de Silva missed the semifinal cut, finishing 39th overall, her performance stood out among the 50 swimmers competing in the event. Her previous personal best of 2:10.50, achieved at the World Junior Aquatic Championship in Israel back in 2023, now stands improved.

Expressing her joy, De Silva stated, “I feel very happy about my event and achieving my personal best time. It’s an honor to be the fastest from South Asia in this meet, but there’s definitely a lot of room for improvement.”

As the World Aquatic Championship continues in Doha until February 18, other Sri Lankan swimmers, Akalanka Peiris, Kyle Abeysinghe, and Ganga Senevirathne, are also taking part.
