Boston, Feb 20, 8.30PM – Sri Lanka’s Hiruni Wijayaratne, who lives and runs in the USA, recently ran her best time in over a decade at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational indoor event in Boston. She clocked 4 minutes and 55.44 seconds in the one-mile race. However, her new record is awaiting approval from the Sri Lanka Athletics Record Committee.
Wijeratne, aged 33, holds the national record in eight long-distance events ranging from 10,000 meters to the full marathon. Her latest achievement erases her previous record of 5 minutes and 3.25 seconds, which she set back in 2013 at the Kentany International event in the USA.
Notably, Wijayaratne currently holds the national records in the 10,000 meters, 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, 15 kilometers, half marathon, 25 kilometers, 30 kilometers, and the full marathon. Her most recent marathon record of 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 10 seconds was established in Germany in 2019.
Wijayaratne’s outstanding performance at the Boston University event highlights her remarkable comeback and dedication to her sport. As she awaits confirmation of her new record from the Sri Lanka Athletics Record Committee, her achievement stands as a proof to her exceptional skill as a long-distance runner and a source of inspiration for athletes in Sri Lanka.
