Colombo, Feb 22, 7PM – Sri Lanka’s girl tennis team, with Ivanka Samarasinghe and Dinara de Silva, moved into the semifinals after defeating Malaysia. However, the boys’ team, including Ganuka Fernando and Lithum Jayabandu, was defeated by Jordan in the quarterfinals of the Billie Jean Cup Junior/Junior Davis Cup Asia Oceania Pre-qualifying Tennis Tournament. The tournament is organized by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association and overseen by the International Tennis Federation. It took place at SLTA courts in Colombo.
The Sri Lankan junior girls played exceptionally well. Ivanka Samarasinghe, based in the USA, won against Zooey Mak of Malaysia, and Dinara de Silva from St. Bridget’s Convent beat Malaysia’s Daania Daniella in the singles quarter-finals.
Ivanka Samarasinghe won her match 6-2, 6-2 against Zooey Mak, and Dinara De Silva secured her victory against Daania Daniella with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
On the other hand, Ganuka Fernando from St. Peter’s College fought hard but was defeated by Jordan’s Amar Jaber in a thrilling 2-1 match in the singles quarterfinal. Lithum Jayabandu from Ananda College also faced defeat against the Jordanian opponent.
The Sri Lankan boys couldn’t make it to the semifinals. Jordan won the quarterfinal with Amar Jaber beating Ganuka Fernando 5-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Malek Alqurneh defeating Lithium Jayabandu 6-1, 6-1.
Now, the Sri Lankan girls are set to play against Turkmenistan in the semifinals.
