Jaffna Hindu College’s Yanakan and Dharmasoka College’s Newansa crowned chess champs

Colombo, Jan 3, Wed – Jaffna Hindu College’s P Yanakan and Erandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College emerged victorious in the Under-15 Open Titles of the National Youth Chess Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Chess Federation from December 27 to 30 at Dharmapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya.

In the Boys Under-15 Open category, Hindu College’s Yanakan faced stiff competition from 317 participants over nine rounds and secured the championship with an impressive score of 7.5/9 points. Sethun Neththaru Manuwarana of Nalanda College and PL Liyanage of Dharmaraja College claimed the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Girls Under-15 Open category, Erandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College triumphed over 155 participants in eight rounds, securing the title with a score of 7/8 points. Oneli Vithanawasam of Lyceum International School Wattala took the first runner-up position, while Nemindi Ramanayake of Bandaranaike Central College Gampaha secured the second runner-up spot with a superior tiebreak.

The tournament highlighted the talents of the best school players from across the country in age categories ranging from Under-7 to Under-19 for both girls and boys over four days. The awards ceremony was attended by Sri Lanka Chess Federation President Luxman Wijesuriya and Executive Members of the Federation.
