Kaleel books quarter-final berth at SSC ITF Junior event

Aahil Kaleel 1

COLOMBO, June 4 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s promising youngster Aahil Kaleel of S Thomas’ College Mount Lavina, booked his place in the quarter-finals of the SSC ITF Junior J30 Circuit Week Two Tennis Tournament with a convincing straight-sets victory at the SSC Tennis Courts in Maitland Place, Colombo.

The second-round win ensured Aahil’s passage to the last eight after he outclassed Japan’s Shota Miyanota 6-0, 6-1 in a one-sided encounter. The Sri Lankan dominated from the outset with powerful groundstrokes and consistent serving, giving his opponent little chance to settle into the match.

Aahil displayed excellent control throughout the contest and wrapped up the victory comfortably to continue Sri Lanka’s challenge in the international junior event.

However, it was disappointment for fellow Sri Lankan Ashling de Silva in the boys’ singles second round. Ashling was beaten by Australia’s Chitroda Parth 6-0, 6-3 despite showing some resistance in the second set.

In the girls’ singles second round, Sri Lanka’s Annaya Norbert also bowed out of the tournament after going down to India’s Deepti Venkatesan in straight sets. Deepti secured a 6-2, 6-4 victory to advance to the quarter-finals.
