SINGAPORE: (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s young hockey star, Kaweesha Fernando, stood tall as the Best Goalkeeper in the recently concluded Men’s Junior AHF Cup held in Singapore. Despite the team not achieving a high overall position in the 11-nation tournament, Fernando’s outstanding goalkeeping skills brought great honor to Sri Lanka.
A proud alumnus of St Thomas’ College, Matale, Fernando currently plays for Hatton National Bank in the Mercantile Hockey Tournament. His exceptional performance was highlighted when he was named Player of the Match against Thailand despite Sri Lanka losing the game 2-7.
The Sri Lanka Men’s Under-21 team, unfortunately, did not qualify for the Junior Asia Cup, finishing in the 11th place after facing tough competition from Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, and host Singapore losing all four matches in Pool ‘A’. In contrast, the Women’s team secured a place in the Junior Asia Cup, claiming fourth place overall.
Both Sri Lanka Men’s and Women’s Under-21 hockey teams are scheduled to return home with pride. Their arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport is expected at 12.55PM on Tuesday.
