Lanka IOC pumps excitement into Sri Lanka’s Hockey Nationals

Colombo, Dec 26, Tue – In a landmark decision, the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation (SLHF) proudly announces the upcoming 60th Men’s and 30th Women’s Hockey National Championship, generously sponsored by Lanka IOC. The four-day event is scheduled to unfold from January 25 to 28 at the Shalika Grounds on Park Road in Colombo 5.

Initially planned for November, the 2023 championship faced delays due to unfavorable weather conditions and the December school exams. To ensure optimal playing conditions and maximize participation, organizers made the unanimous decision to reschedule the championship to the end of January.

The tournament will witness the enthusiastic participation of 15 men’s teams and seven women’s teams, showcasing the growing fervor for hockey in the country.

In the men’s category, the teams are grouped into four pools – Pool ‘A,’ featuring Defence Service HA, Gampaha HA, Kandy HA, and Sri Lanka Schools HA; Pool ‘B,’ with Mercantile HA, Uva HA, and Matara HA; Pool ‘C,’ consisting of State Services HA, Matale HA, Combined University HW, and Nationalised Services HA; and Pool ‘D,’ hosting Colombo HA, Kalutara HA, Wennappuwa HA, and Galle HA.

The women’s competition will be equally riveting, with seven teams distributed across Pool ‘A’ and Pool ‘B.’ Pool ‘A’ includes Defence Services HA, Combined University HW, Sri Lanka Schools HA, and Kandy HA, while Pool ‘B’ features Wennappuwa HA, Colombo HA, and Matale HA.

Looking ahead, the SLHF envisions a consistent schedule for future championships, aiming to host the 2024 Nationals in the middle of the year. The rescheduled tournament in January promises an exciting showcase of hockey talent, with teams gearing up to compete fiercely and fans eagerly anticipating thrilling matches at the iconic Shalika Grounds.
