COLOMBO: Apr 3, 1.30PM – The boys’ under-19 badminton team from Lyceum International School Gampaha has emerged as champions in the Division C category! They battled it out against Asian Grammar School Gothatuwa and came out victorious with a score of 3-2. This exciting victory took place at the Inter-school Under-19 Badminton Team Championships 2024, organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association. The event was held at the Royal College Sports Complex in Colombo from March 30 to April 1.
Out of 33 schools from across the island, Lyceum Gampaha rose to the top under the leadership of their captain, Thisal Waduge. The team included talented players like Thevindu Bandara, Chanaka Gamage, Pansilu Fonseka, Binu Supurachchi, Saviru Gomes, Uden Rajakaruna, Ranindu Seneviratne, Kisandu Hettiarachchi, and Shenuka Dineth.
Their journey to victory wasn’t easy. They triumphed over Chandananda College Kandy in the semi-finals with a flawless score of 3-0, and they had also defeated Asian Grammar School in the group matches with a score of 2-1.
The Lyceum Gampaha Badminton team is guided by their coach, Chinthaka Fernando, with assistance from Assistant Coach Ravindu Weerasinghe. Dilshi Ariyawansha serves as the Teacher-in-Charge.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Lyceum Gampaha, especially since last year they reached the semi-finals but fell short of the title. Now, they’ve claimed the C Division Title for the first time.
Impressively, this talented team will remain intact for the next year’s competition. Their recent success has also brought them closer to Division B, as they will be promoted next year. Coach Chinthaka Fernando is optimistic about their future, believing that this same team can excel in Division B and hopefully secure the championship title next year.
With their dedication, skill, and teamwork, the Lyceum Gampaha boys’ badminton team has proven themselves as formidable contenders in the field of school badminton.
