BANGKOK, Thailand (ePRESS) — Sri Lanka’s flyweight champion, Umayanga Mihiran, continued his winning streak by defeating Morocco’s Essaadi Hamza 5-0 on the sixth day of the 2024 Boxing 2nd World Qualification Tournament held at the Bangkok Indoor Stadium in Thailand on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Mihiran, who previously beat Singapore’s Teo Warxuan in his first bout on Sunday, secured his second victory with a unanimous decision against last year’s World Championship quarter-finalist Hamza. Competing in the 51kg weight class, Mihiran dominated the fight from the Blue Corner, impressively outscoring the Moroccan boxer 5-0.
Mihiran’s excellent footwork and stamina gave him an edge over Hamza. By the end of the second round, Mihiran had a clear advantage on the scorecards. All five judges scored the first round in his favour, and three judges continued to favour him after the second round.
The young Sri Lankan’s clean boxing skills were praised by coaches from India and the USA. Mihiran, now just two wins away from securing an Olympic quota, will face Iran’s Parviz Mahdl Friday at 7 PM Sri Lanka time.
