Mihiran’s brave run ends with bronze

Umayanga Mihiran

CHIANG MAI, Thailand: (ePRESS) – Umayanga Mihiran made history by clinching a bronze medal in the men’s flyweight (51kg) category at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

This achievement marks Sri Lanka’s first medal in men’s boxing at this prestigious level in 37 years, since P.L.J. Ratnasuriya’s bronze in 1987 in Kuwait City.

Mihiran’s impressive run came to an end in the semifinals, where he faced Uzbekistan’s Asilbek Jalilov, the reigning Asian U22 champion. The fight was a tactical battle, with both boxers displaying exceptional skills and discipline. Mihiran, usually known for his aggressive attacking style, adopted a cautious defensive approach against the elusive Jalilov.

In the first round, Mihiran appeared to be in control, landing sharp left jabs and crisp right hands while maintaining the center of the ring. However, Jalilov edged ahead, with three of the five judges scoring the round 10-9 in his favour.

The second round saw Jalilov’s confidence grow as he used his agility to avoid Mihiran’s advances. Despite Mihiran landing some solid punches, the Uzbek fighter’s elusive style allowed him to maintain the lead. The third round followed a similar pattern, with Mihiran struggling to break through Jalilov’s defence.

Jalilov won the bout by a unanimous decision, with all five judges scoring it 30-27 in his favour. Mihiran, visibly disappointed, accepted the bronze medal, a remarkable achievement for a 21-year-old boxer from Sri Lanka.

Mihiran, a first-year student at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura pursuing a degree in biosystems technology, balances his academic career with his boxing aspirations. He has already come close to qualifying for the Olympics and is now eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Games. His historic medal marks a new chapter for Sri Lankan boxing, and Mihiran’s journey is just beginning.
