COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s National and Junior National Short Course Swimming Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU), kicked off today at the Isipathana College Swimming Pool Complex. With 327 swimmers from 62 teams, including a nine-member contingent from the Maldives, the five-day event promises intense competition and the potential for record-breaking performances.

The championship will see some of the country’s top swimming talent in action, alongside international participants. Among the highlights, US-based Dilanka Shehan, a national open water champion representing Ghefari Dupandan Swim School, is expected to bring his expertise to the pool. Adding to the flair, UK-based Lankan siblings Minagi and Charan Rupesinghe will also compete, marking their return to the Sri Lankan swimming circuit.

One of the most anticipated performances comes from MF Muhammad of Zahira College, an emerging breaststroke star. Experts predict Muhammad may rewrite national records in his category, as he continues to display exceptional form.

Last year’s champions, Killer Whale Aquatics, dominated both the men’s and women’s categories, securing their 10th consecutive title. They are back this year with a formidable lineup, aiming to extend their winning streak.

Swimming enthusiasts are eager to witness the action-packed finals scheduled each day from 3 PM onwards. With a blend of seasoned athletes and rising stars, the championship is expected to set new benchmarks for Sri Lankan swimming.

Experts have high hopes for multiple national records to tumble during the competition, highlighting the progress of swimming in the country. The participation of international swimmers adds an extra layer of challenge.

As the championship unfolds, all eyes will be on the pool to see who will emerge as the new stars of Sri Lankan swimming and whether the record books will be rewritten once again.
