National Gymnastics set for Asian Selection

COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – The 29th National Gymnastic Championship 2024, which will serve as the selection trial for the Asian Gymnastic Championship, will take place on February 5 and 6 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo. The event is organized by the National Gymnastic Association of Sri Lanka (NGASL).

The NGASL aims to select 10 men and 10 women gymnasts to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Gymnastic Championship in Soul, South Korea in May 2025.

The opening ceremony will begin at 9:00 am on February 5, with the finals scheduled for February 6, under the patronage of Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage.

This two-day event, which is the 2024 edition of the championship, was postponed due to the Advanced Level Examinations and will now take place in early February.

In the 2023 edition, Nadila Nethviru from St Benedict’s College Kotahena claimed the men’s national title, while Amaya Sithumini of Sri Jayewardenepura University won the women’s national championship.

Udara Liyanwala, Secretary General of the National Gymnastic Association of Sri Lanka, said:
“We are excited to see our top gymnasts compete for a place in the Asian Gymnastic Championship. This event is crucial for selecting the best athletes to represent Sri Lanka in South Korea. We hope to see strong performances from all participants as they aim to make the country proud on the international stage.”
