Perumal smashes 14-year-old record at IISSC

COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – Christina Perumal of Asian International School (AIS) set a new milestone on the final day of the 29th Inter-International School Swimming Championship (IISSC), breaking a 14-year-old record in the Girls Under-20 100m Breaststroke at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool on Sunday.

Perumal, who trains with Killer Whale Aquatics (KWA), posted an impressive time of 1:17.77, surpassing the previous record of 1:18.04 set by Mineka Karunaratne, also from AIS, in 2010.

Karunaratne, a South Asian medalist and former AIS swimmer, is currently the national record holder for the women’s 50m Breaststroke.

Meanwhile, Hiruki de Silva of Gateway College Colombo also made an impact, setting a new meet record in the Girls Under-20 50m Freestyle with a time of 27.97 seconds, breaking her own previous record of 28.32 set in 2022.

De Silva, another elite swimmer from KWA, continued her dominant performance by setting a new meet record in the Girls Under-20 200m Freestyle, clocking 2:12.09 and surpassing her 2022 record of 2:12.90. That completed her triple meet records for the two-day event

In the Boys Under-16 category, Okitha Gunasekara of Elizabeth Moir School set a new record in the 200m Freestyle, finishing in 2:01.14 and breaking the previous record of 2:05.10 set by Stephan Perera in 2016.

Dulaksha Ganidu from Lyceum International School Ratnapura also etched his name in the record books by breaking an eight-year-old record in the Boys Under-14 Freestyle. His time of 2:12.51 surpassed the previous record of 2:15.57 set by Amjad Hasan of Lyceum International School Wattala in 2016.

The two-day competition, which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex, saw Lyceum Inernational School Wattala winning the title for the consecutive 11th year and a total of 15 new meet records set, with 10 on the first day and 5 on the final day. The championship was organized by AIS and sponsored by FONDRE.
