In the upcoming Nippon Paint Sri Lanka Rugby Major League XV-a-side Rugby Tournament starting on 1st December, the Police Sports Club Rugby team will be led by the dynamic front row player, Mohan Wimalaratne.

Mohan Wimalaratne, a former Mahanamian, has been part of the Sri Lanka Police force as a Sub Inspector for six years. During this time, he’s been a key player for the Police rugby team, showcasing his skills both as a second row forward and a flanker when needed. The team, finishing sixth in the points table last season, is gearing up for the new tournament with a mix of experienced players and fresh faces.

Among the new additions are school leavers, including Navin Kanishka, the former captain of Isipathana, and Chamindu Dilshan. Himash de Silva and W.M.M. Boteju, who played for Air Force and CH & FC last season, have also joined the Police squad. Notably, four players from St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, and a player from D.S.Senanayake College have strengthened the team.

Former Havelocks scrum half Mithun Hapugoda and Hirantha Perera from CH have crossed over to boost the team’s lineup for this year’s tournament. With a total of 59 players, the Police team is aiming for a top position in the points table.

Head coach Nilfer Ibrahim, an experienced figure in rugby coaching, will lead the team. With a coaching background spanning schools, clubs, and national teams, Ibrahim is eyeing the championship this season, backed by the team’s seasoned players. Dulanjana Wijesinghe, a former Navy and Sri Lanka hooker, will serve as the forwards coach.

The Police Sports Club will kick off their campaign against Navy on 2nd December at their home ground, marking the beginning of what promises to be a crucial and exciting season for the team.
