Record-breakers and champions: TISSL athletic championship highlights

Colombo, Feb 26, 6PM – Dineth Weeraratne from Leeds International School and Shenella Seneviratne from Gateway College Colombo emerged as the Best Performers at the thrilling 22nd TISSL International Schools Athletic Championship, hosted by Gateway College. The event, held at the Sugathadasa Stadium and graced by His Excellency Andrew Patrik, the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka concluded on Sunday.

Weeraratne’s Remarkable Feat

Dineth Weeraratne of Leeds International School left spectators in awe by setting a new meet record in the boys’ 100m heats, clocking an impressive 10.62 seconds. His outstanding performance earned him the Best Athlete Award of the RIT Alles Challenge Trophy and the Edexcel Challenge Trophy for the Best Performer of the Meet, recognized by Pearson Qualifications International. Weeraratne was also honored with the prestigious Ritzbury Challenge Cup.

Seneviratne Shines Bright

Meanwhile, Shenella Seneviratne of Gateway College Colombo soared to victory in the girls’ 100m event, clinching the gold medal with a stunning time of 12.20 seconds. Seneviratne’s exceptional talent earned her the title of Best Girl Athlete, along with the esteemed Ritzbury Challenge Cup for the Best Female Athlete.

Lyceum International School Wattala Dominates

Lyceum International School Wattala emerged as the top school of the championship, securing a remarkable 803 points on the leaderboard. Gateway College Colombo closely followed in second place with 756 points, while Lyceum International School Panadura and its Ratnapura branch claimed third and fourth positions with 358 and 354 points, respectively. Other notable schools such as OKI International School (276), Lyceum International School Nugegoda (260), Asian International School (235), and Colombo International School Colombo (206) also earned well-deserved places based on their points.

Championing Across Age Groups

The championship also celebrated champions across various age groups, with standout performances from young athletes like Umaya Silva of St. Nicholas International School and Yunal Ranaweera of Lyceum International School Wattala, who claimed titles in the Under-12 category. Chenuthi Perera of Lyceum International School Panadura and Ashain Thewarapperuma of Gateway College Colombo dominated the Under-14 events.

In the Under-16 and Under-18 categories, Dilini Rajapaksa of Lyceum International School Wattala and Nehansa Paranaliyanage of Gateway College Colombo emerged as champions, while Dananjana Rahasgalla of Lyceum International School Ratnapura and Shanella Seneviratne of Gateway College Colombo excelled in the Under-20 events.

Relay Triumph

The Overall Relay Championship was claimed by Lyceum International School Wattala, winning the Gateway College Graduate School Challenge Trophy with 129 points, highlighting their teamwork and collective excellence.

Around 1500 athletes and 300 technical officials took part in the two-day sporting extravaganza. Moreover, an enthusiastic crowd of 15,000 students, parents, and alumni cheered for the athletes. The event boasted principal sponsors including Pearson Edexcel, Flinders University, and Ritzbury, the flagship brand of Ceylon Biscuits Limited. Other sponsors include Pyramid Wilmar, VIDA Medical, Sense Rehabilitation, and Sports Hospital.

The 22nd TISSL International Schools Athletic Championship wasn’t only about winning. It was a big celebration of talent, hard work, and sportsmanship among TISSL schools. Gateway College did an amazing job organizing it for the 12th time. Even after the event ended, the feeling of success and friendship stayed in the air. It encouraged young athletes to dream big and aim high for Sri Lanka’s future in sports.
