Colombo, Jan 25, 9.40AM – In a proud moment for Colombo International School, Reshan Algama has clinched the prestigious title of “Most Outstanding Schools Golfer of the Year – 2023.” The recognition was bestowed upon the 15-year-old golf prodigy at the 2nd Sportunleash Schools Sports Awards 2024 held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on Wednesday night.
Organized by Sportsinfo in collaboration with the Institute of Sports Management (IOSM), the annual event aims to celebrate exceptional performances by young athletes across various school sports in the country.
Reshan Algama, currently Sri Lanka’s top-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), earned this accolade for his stellar performance throughout the past year. Golf made its debut in this year’s awards ceremony, highlighting Algama’s outstanding achievements.
This recognition also marks Algama’s inclusion in the Vision 2036 ‘Lion Warrior’ program, a strategic initiative aimed at nurturing and developing Sri Lankan athletes for the 2036 Olympics.
Beyond being a personal triumph, Reshan Algama’s success is a proof to the support provided by Sri Lanka Golf’s Junior Program in cultivating talent. Algama emerged victorious in the recent Sri Lanka Golf Ranking Tournament, and his club, Royal Colombo Golf Club, where he practices, also secured victory in the Srixon RCGC Junior Golf Tournament.
The Sportunleash Awards ceremony recognized outstanding achievements in more than 20 major sports, including Cricket, Rugby, Football, Netball, Athletics, Swimming, Basketball, Karate, Tennis, and Volleyball. Awards were also presented for categories such as Most Outstanding School Sports Personality of the Year, School Sports Team of the Year, Most Outstanding School Coach of the Year, Most Outstanding School Sports Master In Charge of the Year, Inspirational School Sports Personality of the Year, and Most Outstanding Sports School of the Year
