Colombo, Jan 4, Thu – In the National Youth Chess Championship at Dharmapala College Pannipitiya from December 27 to 30, Dulnith Sanviru of Royal College triumphed in the Under-13 category, scoring an impressive 8 out of 9 points across nine rounds. Simultaneously, Dulnima Ratnayake from Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya secured the girls’ Under-13 title with a strong performance, earning 7.5 out of 8 points in eight rounds.
Competing amidst 502 participants in intense matches, Sanviru claimed the top position. The first runner-up was Vinuda Wickramasinghe of Boswell International College, and the second runner-up spot went to LN Dandeniya of Maliyadeva College, who secured the position with a superior tiebreak score.
In the girls’ Under-13 segment, featuring 228 players in eight rounds, Dulinma Ratnayake of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya emerged as the champion with an impressive score of 7.5 out of 8 points. Theruni Jayasundara of St Paul’s Girls School Milagiriya and Jenuki Alwis of Lyceum International School, Wattala, secured the first and second runner-up positions, respectively, with superior tiebreaks.
The tournament spanned four days, including participants from Under-7 to Under-19, following a Swiss format with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The awards ceremony was graced by Luxman Wijesuriya, the President of the Sri Lanka Chess Federation, and other Executive Members of the Federation.
