Welisara, January 14, 6.15AM – In a powerful display, reigning champions Kandy SC dominated the game against Navy SC, securing a convincing 48-7 victory at Welisara on Saturday during the penultimate weekend of the SLR Nippon Paint Club Rugby League.

Despite facing an early challenge, Kandy SC, determined to maintain their unbeaten record, executed a well-orchestrated backline move in the fifth minute. Skipper Lavanga Perera touched down, and with Tarinda Ratwatte’s conversion, Kandy took an early 7-0 lead.

Navy SC responded with resilience, and in the 22nd minute, forward Uchitha Jayasoorya scored an unconverted try, expanding Kandy’s lead to 12-0. Winger Amith Madushanka showcased his skills, scoring a fantastic try for Navy, with Isuru Kongahawatte converting successfully to bring the score to 7-12. However, Kandy added another unconverted try in the 38th minute through center Danushka Ranjan, leading 17-7 at halftime.

The second half was a one-sided affair, with Kandy SC accelerating their pace and adding four more tries. Lock Thilina Bandara scored in the 43rd minute, and with Ratwatte’s conversion, Kandy led 24-7. Scrumhalf Heshan Jansen contributed with a try in the 46th minute, converted by flyhalf Nigel Ratwatte, extending the lead to 31-7.

The Ratwatte duo collaborated again in the 53rd minute, with Tarinda touching down and Nigel converting, pushing Kandy further ahead at 38-7. Kandy maintained relentless pressure in Navy’s territory, earning a penalty that Tarinda Ratwatte converted in the 60th minute, making it 41-7.

In the final quarter, Kandy introduced fresh legs through substitutions, and despite a deceleration in pace, they managed to score their seventh try. Center Kavishka Bandara ran through Navy’s defense, allowing Tarinda Ratwatte an easy conversion.

This commanding victory sets the stage for a crucial clash between Kandy SC and CR&FC next week at Nittawela, where one of the unbeaten teams will see their winning streak come to an end as the tournament progresses to the Super Round.
