S. Thomas’ Prep School’s Rugby Carnival draws record teams

KOLLUPITIYA: (ePRESS) – The Second Youth Rugby Carnival organized by S. Thomas’ Preparatory School is set to take place on Saturday, June 22, at the CR and FC grounds in Colombo. The event will start at 8:30 AM and feature over 500 junior rugby players.

A press conference about the event was held at the school’s main hall on Wednesday. This year, the carnival has attracted 42 teams, an increase from the 38 teams that participated last year. Leading rugby schools such as S. Thomas’ College, Royal College, Isipathana College, and St. Peter’s College will compete, along with new development schools like CMS Kotte, St. Anthony’s College Wattala, and Sri Sumangala College Panadura.

The matches will be organized into different age groups: Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, and Under-16. The Under-10 category will have 10 teams, the Under-12 and Under-14 categories will each have 12 teams, and the Under-16 category will feature eight teams. The Under-16 matches will be played with 11 players per side, while the other age groups will play seven-a-side.

All referees for the tournament are provided by Sri Lanka Rugby referees. Elephant House is the main sponsor, with Rio Ice Cream also supporting the event. The Tournament Director is Dilroy Fernando, and the event is facilitated by Agoal Rugby.

Rev. Fr. Nihal Fernando, Asanga Seneviratne (Chairman of Competitions, Asia Rugby and Old Boy), and Chairman of the Organizing Committee Mashish Hameed spoke at the press conference.
