Colombo, Feb 18, 8.30PM – Shamil Wakeel, the second-best squash player in Sri Lanka, secured the Runner-up spot, while Nevindu Lakman clinched third place at the 3rd Sanjay Gupta Memorial Squash Tournament in India from February 9 to 12.
Wakeel, who used to play for DS Senanayake College, was the top seed but lost to an Indian player 1-3 in the final, settling for second place. It was a tough match for Wakeel, and he narrowly missed the championship title.
Nevindu Lakman, a student at DS Senanayake College and the Best Schools Squash Player of the Year, ranked third in Sri Lanka. Despite being seeded second in the tournament, Lakman also lost to an Indian player and finished in third place.
The tournament was mostly dominated by Indian players, and Wakeel and Lakman were the only foreign participants in the event, which featured 64 players.
