SLG Rankings: Dhanushan’s birdie blitz shakes leaderboard

K Dhanushan 1

DIGANA, Kandy, April 10, 2025 (ePERSS) – K. Dhanushan of the Royal Colombo Golf Club produced the best round of the day to storm to the top of the leaderboard on Day 2 of the Sri Lanka Golf (SLG) April Ranking Tournament, being played at the scenic Victoria Golf Resort in Digana, Kandy.

Dhanushan fired a superb two-under-par 71 yesterday, becoming the only player to go under par in the second round of this three-day tournament. With a total gross of 146 over two days, he now shares the top spot with Day 1 leader Chalitha Pushpika, who stumbled slightly with a two-over-par 75 in his second round.

Dhanushan was in fine form, collecting five birdies on the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th and 11th holes. The 19-year-old looked composed and confident on the course.

“This is the first time I’ve tied for the lead in an SLG ranking event. I haven’t won a ranking tournament yet — my best was finishing sixth,” Dhanushan said with a calm smile. “But I don’t put pressure on myself. I’m just going to play golf.”

He also praised the conditions at the Victoria Golf Resort. “The greens are in brilliant condition, even though the speed is a little low. But overall, it’s a good surface to play with confidence.”

While Dhanushan surged ahead, experienced campaigner Chanaka Perera quietly moved into contention with a solid even-par 73. He now sits third on the leaderboard with a total gross of 149, just three shots behind the joint leaders.

Priya Hemantha, the teaching professional who was in second place after the opening round, carded a three-over-par 76 to fall to fourth place. His total gross stands at 150.

Veteran golfer Kushal Johnpillai made a strong move on Day 2 with a one-under-par 72, bringing his total to 154. That was enough to push him up to fifth place, edging ahead of young Reshan Algama, who carded a 75 for the same total but fell to sixth due to a lower second-round score.

Rounding out the top 10 are Sachin de Silva (157), PDSU Kumara (158) and Adithya Weerasinghe (158), who all made the cut. Out of 37 players in the gents’ division, only 15 advanced to the final round.

In the ladies’ division, Sithara Lorance held on to her lead with a second round gross of 95. Her total gross of 182 puts her just one shot ahead of H.N. Navinchandra, who had the best round of the day among the women with a 93, for a total of 183.
