AMPARA: (ePRESS) – The Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) celebrated the opening of its 14th center across the country last week. The new complex was inaugurated by Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon at the Ampara District Tennis Courts in Ampara.
This big project was led by DIG Damayantha Wijayasri and Major General Wipula Chandrasiri RSP USP psc, with support from Senthil Thondaman, the Governor of Eastern Province, and W.D. Weerasinghe, a member of parliament. They all worked under the guidance of Iqbal bin Issack, the President of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association.
President Issack shared, “We plan to host more tournaments soon, both this year and the next. Our goal is to organize an international event right here in Ampara.”
He continued, “Our aim is to promote tennis in Ampara and other areas outside the main cities. With Ampara becoming our 14th center, tennis will be encouraged in Negombo, Kurunegala, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Batticaloa, Jaffna, and many more places.”
Governor Thondaman expressed his support, saying, “I will work with the Provincial Education Ministry to ensure that playing tennis becomes mandatory for all schools in the province. Children will have the opportunity to play tennis for one hour every day.”
