CAMBODIA: (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s Davis Cup team delivered a stunning performance in their Pool ‘A’ encounter at the Davis Cup – Asia/Oceania Group IV, triumphing over top-seeded Kyrgyzstan with a 2-1 victory at the Morodok Techo National Stadium on Thursday.
The Sri Lankan team faced a tough challenge against Kyrgyzstan, known as one of the strongest teams in Pool ‘A’. Apna Perera, Sri Lanka’s top-ranked player, led the charge by defeating Ilgiz Kamchibe in straight sets, with scores of 7-5, 6-3. Perera’s victory in the Singles match proved crucial, setting the stage for Sri Lanka’s success.
In the Doubles match, Sri Lanka’s unbeaten pair, captain Harshana Godamanne and Thehan Wijemanne, continued their winning streak. They overcame Kirill Kistanov and Mirgiiaz Mirdzh with scores of 6-4, 7-5 in a closely contested match. The duo’s strategic play and determination secured another pivotal win for Sri Lanka, clinching the tie at 2-1.
Earlier in the tournament, Sri Lanka’s Ashen Silva fought valiantly but was narrowly defeated by Kirill Kistanov in a hard-fought Singles match. The scorecard reflected a closely fought battle, ending 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in favor of the Kyrgyzstan player. Despite Silva’s effort, Kyrgyzstan claimed their lone victory in the tie.
With this impressive victory over Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka now positions themselves strongly for the upcoming playoffs scheduled for Saturday, July 13. The team’s resilience and skill on the court have kept their hopes high as they continue their quest in the Davis Cup competition.
