Colombo, Jan 3, Wed – The Indian Government has extended an invitation to Sri Lanka, conveyed through the Foreign Ministry and Sports Ministry, to participate in the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Youth Aquatic Sports Championship. The event is scheduled to take place from February 7 to 14 in New Delhi, as announced by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union.

This tournament, focused on Youth Under-20, will display the talents of South Asian BIMSTEC member countries in swimming, diving, and water polo. Sri Lanka aims to field three teams, as shared by SLASU General Secretary Mahinda Liyanage.

The SLASU Selection Committee has finalized a 40-member swimming squad, comprising 20 boys and 20 girls, all under the age of 20. The diving team selection was based on recent Diving Nationals, while the water polo team consists of the same 13 girls and 13 boys who were previously selected for the postponed 11th Asian Age Group Swimming Championship, set to be held from February 26 to March 9 in the Philippines.

The three-day competition is scheduled to take place at the SPMC Indoor Swimming Complex in Talkatora, New Delhi, featuring an eight-lane 50m pool, and adhering to the latest FINA Rules of 2023.

The Swimming Federation of India will organize the tournament in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Government of India, ensuring a coordinated and well-managed event.
