Sri Lankan stars shine in Vietnam: Usgodaarachchi and Diyunuge smash Girls Doubles Title

Hanoi, Vietnam, Jan 12, 5.30PM – In an exciting victory, Sandithi Usgodaarachchi and Akeesa Diyunuge from Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the Girls Doubles Championship of the First Week of the ITF Asia 14&Under Development Championship 2024. The championship, organized by the Asian Tennis Federation, first week concluded yesterday in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Competing in the Regional Qualifying Event for South Asia, South East Asia, and East Asia, the Sri Lankan duo claimed the title by defeating their opponents 2-0 in the final. The scorelines favored the Sri Lankan pair, with readings of 6-4 and 6-2.

Usgodaarachchi, representing Musaeus College, and Diyunuge, from Newstead College, joined forces in the Girls Doubles Segment to defeat Annya Norbet and Bhin Nihen.

Notably, Sri Lanka’s Annaya Norbet, partnering with Vietnamese Bhin Nihen, secured the runner-up position in the Girls Doubles Event.

In Girls Singles, Annaya Norbet secured the runner-up position, facing defeat against the top-seeded Naba Nishan of Maldives with a scoreline of 6-1 and 6-0.

Akeesa Diyunuge also displayed her skills in the Girls Singles category. She secured the third-place position by defeating the second-seeded N Huynh of Vietnam with a scoreline of 4-1, 2-4, 12-10 in favor of the Sri Lankan player.

In the Boys Doubles category, Risith Somarathna and Ashlin de Silva claimed the runners-up position, while the championship went to Tien Anh Le and Tuan Phong Vu of Vietnam with a scoreline of 6-4 and 6-1.

Somaratna of Ananda College secured the third place in Boys Singles. Somaratna won the match by 4-1 and 4-0.

With the participation of seven countries, including Vietnam, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Bhutan, Mongolia, and Brunei, the tournament’s first week took place from January 8 to 12. The second week is scheduled to begin on January 15 and conclude on January 19.
