COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – General Secretary of National Gymnastic Association of Sri Lanka Udara Liyanwala and National Coach Ranjana Tharanga left the island last night to participate in the 85th International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Congress, taking place in Doha, Qatar, from October 23 until October 27.

This marks the first time National Gymnastic Association of Sri Lanka’s newly elected officials will represent the country at the FIG Congress, a prestigious event held once every four years, where 165 national federations come together to discuss the future of gymnastics worldwide.

During the Congress, Liyanwala aims to contest for a position in the FIG Committee. “We are hoping to bring international judges to Sri Lanka, as we currently have only three male judges and no female international judges. We will also seek support for international judging training programs,” he said.

National Coach Ranjana Tharanga, attending the event with his own funds, also plans to engage in talks with FIG President and officials about improving gymnastics in Sri Lanka. Tharanga, an Olympic coach who accompanied Milka de Silva to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, recently coached Nadila Nethviru to a semi-final finish at the 2023 Asian Games in China.

“We are committed to representing Sri Lanka and working toward the development of gymnastics in the country,” Tharanga added.
