Sri Lanka’s Wakeel Emerges Victorious in Australia

Sri Lanka’s national number two, Shamil Wakeel emerged victorious in the Pennant Hills Alto Open PSA Satellite Championship held recently in Pennant Hills, New South Wales, Australia.

Competing in the PSA Men’s Open category, Shamil Wakeel secured the championship title by defeating Australia’s Jack Hudson with a 3-1 scoreline (11-7, 6-11, 11-5, 11-5) in a thrilling 50-minute showdown. The semi-final saw Wakeel clinch another impressive victory, this time against Australia’s Bradely Fullick, with a scoreline of 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, and 11-4. The tournament, which offered a $1000 prize money for the winners, showcased Wakeel’s skill and determination in the competitive squash arena.

The quarter-final saw Wakeel beating Kijan Sultana 3-1, with a scoreline of 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, and 11-2.

An alumnus of DS Senanayake College, Wakeel represented Sri Lanka in the recent Asian Games in the Mixed Doubles event alongside women’s national champion Chanithma Sinaly. He couldn’t participate in the 15th Sri Lanka Air Force Squash Championship due to his overseas commitments.

Looking ahead, Wakeel, along with national number one Ravindu Laksiri, will be competing in another PSA tournament in Australia next week. Laksiri has already left the country to participate in that tournament.
