Colombo, Feb 13, 10.30AM – The Sri Lanka Girls Youth Water Polo Team, led by Chrishael Robin of Ladies’ College, achieved a remarkable feat by securing the bronze medal at the inaugural BIMSTEC Youth Aquatic Championship held in New Delhi, India on February 9.
Facing tough competition from prominent South Asian nations, the Sri Lankan team displayed outstanding performance, outshining formidable opponents to claim the bronze medal.
Reflecting on the experience, Chrishael Robin, the captain of the Sri Lanka girls’ youth water polo team, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It was an amazing experience for our team to play with national teams from many countries. It gave us an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and learn more by playing with more experienced teams. It helped us to know how water polo is in an international level.”
The Sri Lankan team comprised 17 talented members, with Ladies’ College well-represented by captain Chrishael Robin, Treasa Adams, Ayahna Amarasinghe, Sitharaah Zuhair, Rahell Dias, and Tharuki Kalansooriya. Additionally, six players from Visakha Vidyalaya – Arani Dorabawila, Mehansa Jayaratne, Poojani Sankapala, Rohansa Vidyaratne, Ruwanya Dadagamuwa, and Chamudi Sooriyabandara – contributed to the team’s success.
Bishop’s College, the national champion, fielded five formidable players including Dulmi Dias, Selina Silva, Imaaya Perera, Aashi Perera, and Sinali Ratnayake.
Coach Sachitha Jayathilake, a former S Thomas’ College water polo player and multi-talented athlete who represented Sri Lanka in the Asian Games cricket team, commended the Sri Lankan team’s exceptional performance, describing it as excellent.
