Colombo, Mar 3, 7.30PM – St. Peter’s College clinched the Zahira College Rugby Centenary Sevens Cup Championship with an impressive victory over Isipathana College. In a thrilling final match held at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo, St. Peter’s outplayed Isipathana, securing a 17-5 win after leading 10-5 at halftime.
St. Peter’s College showed they were the best by scoring one goal and two tries, while Isipathana only managed to score one try. Coach Sanath Martis’ team displayed amazing skills, winning the Cup Championship in a stylish manner.
Vishenka Silva emerged as a key player for St. Peter’s College, opening the scoring in the third minute with a remarkable performance. Pasindu Bandara extended the lead with a second try, securing a commanding 10-0 lead for the Bambalapitiya School.
Isipathana College fought back, with Shahid Zumri scoring their sole try in the ninth minute, narrowing the gap to 10-5. However, St. Peter’s continued to dominate, with Vishenka Silva sealing victory with his second try in the 13th minute, bringing the final score to 17-5.
Referee Ravin Alexander blew the final whistle as St. Peter’s College celebrated their well-deserved triumph in the Zahira College Rugby Centenary Sevens Cup Championship.
In exciting semi-final matches, St. Peter’s College defeated DS Senanayake College by 35-0 in the second semi-final, while Isipathana College secured their spot in the finals by defeating Wesley College by 33-12 in the first semi-final.
Third Place victory for DS Senanayake College
DS Senanayake College secured the third-place position in the Cup Segment. In a closely contested match against Wesley College, DS Senanayake finished with a 12-7 victory. Aadi Abdul’s early try and Rasindu Bandara’s conversion played a crucial role in clinching the third-place spot.
Royal College claims Plate Championship
In a thrilling Plate Final, Royal College competed against St Joseph’s College. The match was filled with intense moments, and Royal College came out on top with a 24-17 victory. Key players such as Didula Jayasuriya and Kyam de Silva displayed their talents, playing a significant role in Royal’s triumph in the Plate Championship.
Trinity College triumphs in Bowl Championship
Trinity College secured victory in the Bowl Championship Final against Kingswood. With Udeesha Ratnayake’s standout performance, Trinity claimed a 22-5 victory. The Lions, coached by Fazil Marija, roared to success in the Bowl Championship.
Maliyadeva College seals Shield Championship
In the Shield Final, Maliyadeva College faced Mahanama College, emerging triumphant with a 17-12 win. Devan’s Malisha Siriwardena and Minhin Dissanayake were standout performers, leading Maliyadeva to victory and securing the Shield Championship.
Women’s Rugby: Navy SC prevails in exhibition match
During an exhibition match between Army SC Women and Navy SC Women, the latter won with a score of 19-12. Navy SC displayed their strength and skills in women’s rugby, bringing an exciting element to the Zahira College Rugby Centenary Sevens event.
