COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – MF Muhammad from Zahira College drew attention at the 48th National Age Group Swimming Championship. On the fourth day of the 48th National Age Group Swimming Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex, Muhammad notched up his third new meet record and clinched his fifth gold medal.
In the Boys Under-17 100m Breaststroke final, Muhammad shattered the previous record, clocking in at 1:08.28. This impressive feat surpassed his own record of 1:11.47 set just last year. Richmond College’s MM Boomikethu secured the silver medal, also surpassing the previous record with a time of 1:10.20.
Muhammad’s dominance extended across all five events he swam so far, as he now boasts five gold medals and has set three new meet records in the Under-17 category for the 50m, 100m, and 200m Breaststroke, in addition to victories in the 400m Individual Medley and the 50m Butterfly.
But Muhammad wasn’t the only star of the competition. Rushalee Dissanayake from Musaeus College made her mark by breaking the Girls Under-15 1500m Freestyle record, improving it by five seconds. Her time of 20:02.25 erased a record set seven years ago.
Syesha Anthony of Rainbow Aquatics continued to shine, setting her second meet record in the Girls Under-17 50m Butterfly event with a time of 29.87. Notably, Chanudi Kumarapperuma of Lyceum International School Nugegoda, who clinched silver, also surpassed the previous record.
Young talent Maheli Navithma from St John’s Girls School Panadura made her presence known, setting a new meet record in the Girls Under-11 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:35.41.
