KOTAWILA, Matara: (ePRESS) – Maris Stella College, Negombo, and Lyceum International School, Wattala, clinched the Boys’ and Girls’ Championships, respectively, at the 53rd Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship, which concluded yesterday at the District Sports Complex. The three-day meet, organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association and sponsored by Ritzbury, witnessed thrilling performances and 11 new meet records.
Maris Stella College secured the Boys’ Championship with an impressive 82 points. St Benedict’s College, Kotahena, emerged as the Boys’ Relay Champions with 19 points.
DSS Samalka of Gonagala Maha Vidyalaya, competing in the Under-14 Boys’ Long Jump with a leap of 6.54m, earning 824 points and the Best Boys’ Athlete title. In the Under-15 Boys’ 400m, N. Ranasinghe of Gateway College, Colombo, clocked 60.7 seconds, earning 809 points and also being recognized as the Best Athlete Under-15.
Lyceum International School, Wattala, scored 60 points to claim the Girls’ Championship. Girls’ High School, Kandy, took the Girls’ Relay Championship with 18 points.
Lyceum’s Dilini Rajapaksha was the star of the meet, earning two titles: Best Girls’ Athlete and Under-15 Best Athlete. Her extraordinary performance in the Under-15 Long Jump, with a leap of 6.04m, not only secured 1007 points but also shattered the previous meet record of 5.47m.
The competition saw 11 new meet records over three days, along with three equal meet records. On the final day, four records were set:
Boys’ Under-14 200m: A. Thevarapperuma of Gateway College, Colombo, with a time of 23.4 seconds.
Boys’ Under-13 High Jump: Sinura Anjana of Ka/Imbulana Maha Vidyalaya cleared 1.64m.
Boys’ Under-13 4x100m Relay: St Benedict’s College, Kotahena, finished in 50.7 seconds.
Girls’ Under-14 Shot Put: P.A. Hasarali of Sussex College, Ratnapura, with a throw of 1.55m.
Other notable records include:
Boys’ Under-14 600m: Sinura Salgado of St Benedict’s College completed the race in 1:29.8.
Boys’ Under-12 High Jump: K.W.S. Pabasara of Vijitha MMV, Dickwella, cleared 1.55m, surpassing last year’s record of 1.51m.
Girls’ Under-14 600m: G. Aloka of Lyceum Wattala clocked 1:41.7, breaking the previous record of 1:42.6.
Girls’ Under-15 Shot Put: Dilki Karunaratne of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo, threw 12.59m, eclipsing the old record of 11.33m.
Boys’ Under-15 Javelin Throw: M. Rajasinghe of St Joseph’s College hurled the javelin 56.07m, surpassing the previous mark of 55.05m.
