COLOMBO, May 29 (ePRESS) – Veteran professional golfer N. Thangaraja produced a superb final-round performance to win the Sri Lanka Open Championship 2026 in commanding fashion at the Royal Colombo Golf Club yesterday, finishing eight shots clear of his nearest rival on the par-71 course.
Thangaraja, one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced golfers, sealed the prestigious title with a brilliant final-round score of 64, the lowest round of the tournament, to finish with an aggregate of 266 over four rounds.
Starting the final day with a narrow advantage, Thangaraja elevated his game when it mattered most, adding the outstanding 64 to his earlier rounds of 68, 68 and 66. His four-day total proved too strong for the rest of the field as he cruised to a comfortable victory.
Young golfer, 18-year-old Reshan Algama finished runner-up on 274, eight strokes behind the champion. Sri Lanka’s number one junior golfer Algama carded rounds of 68, 68, 70 and 68 to produce one of the most consistent performances of the championship.
Experienced professional Anura Rohana secured third place with a total of 278 after returning scores of 70, 69, 71 and 68.
A closely fought battle for fourth place saw Haroon Aslam and former leader Mithun Perera finish tied on 279. Haroon recorded rounds of 69, 71, 70 and 69, while Mithun, who led the tournament after the opening rounds, slipped out of contention after a disappointing final-round 74 despite earlier scores of 66, 69 and 70.
Veteran professional Vijitha Bandara ended sixth on 281, while N. Amarapadma was seventh on 286.
Navy pro golfer Chalitha Pushpika finished eighth with 288, followed by B.G. Lalith Kumara on 291 and Adhithya Weerasinghe in tenth place on 295.
The four-day championship, held from May 26 to 29 at Sri Lanka’s oldest golf club, attracted many of the country’s leading professionals and amateurs. However, the tournament ultimately belonged to Thangaraja, whose remarkable final-round charge underlined his class and experience.
