COLOMBO: (ePRESS) – Thurstan College karate team clinched the Boys Championship at the Western Province National Schools Games Karate Championship. Organized by the Ministry of Education, the event was held recently at the Indoor Stadium in Bandaragama.
The tournament featured competitions in the Under-16, Under-18, and Under-20 categories. Thurstan College emerged victorious, winning the overall boys’ championship and qualifying for the National Games.
The Thurstan College team, led by captain Dulvan Jayaratne and vice-captain Achala Wickramasinghe, showcased outstanding performance. Jayaratne competed in Kata, Kumite, and team Kumite, earning silver medals in both Kata and Kumite, and a bronze medal in team Kumite.
Overall, Thurstan College secured two gold medals, two silver medals, and three bronze medals. The gold medals were won by vice-captain Achala Wickramasinghe and Under-18 player Janadhi Narangoda in Kumite events. The bronze medals in team Kumite were claimed by captain Dulvan Jayaratne, Janadhi Narangoda, and Charun Dias.
Thurstan College’s impressive performance at the Western Province Championship highlights their committment, setting a strong foundation for their participation in the upcoming National Games.
