DHAKA, Bangladesh, Friday, December 19 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s leading amateur golfer, Dhanushan Kumar, finished strongly to claim seventh place at the 39th Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship, which concluded at Kurmitola Golf Club on Friday.

From eight foreign nations represented at the tournament, Kumar was the only international player to finish inside the top 10.

The 20-year-old from Royal Colombo Golf Club carded a gross score of six over par 78 in the final round, finishing with a total of 311 over four rounds, equivalent to 23 over par. Kumar’s steady performance on the last day allowed him to secure a top-ten finish in a competitive field of 49 golfers who made the cut after the second round.

The championship, played over 72 holes, saw Sharif Hossain of Bangladesh (BAN-C) and Abu Bokor Siddik (BAN-A) tie at the top with 12 over par 300 gross, while Munna Mia of KGC claimed third with 14 over par 302 gross. Kumar, alongside Md Shamim of BGCC and Md Shahabuddin of Kurmitola Golf Club—Bangladesh’s number one golfer—shared the 23-over-par mark, reflecting a tight mid-field battle in the final standings.

Kumar’s round-by-round scores – 79, 78, 76, 78 – displayed grit and the ability to maintain consistency under pressure. His strong finish on Day 4, the best among two Sri Lankan golfers.

In contrast, Sri Lanka’s other golfer Sundaram Dhuwarshan of Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, who was controversially selected over Sri Lanka’s reigning Amateur Champion Chanaka Perera, struggled throughout the tournament. Dhuwarshan ended in 47th place out of 49 players who made the cut, carding a final round 91 and a total of 342 gross, 54 over par, well below expectations. His performance reignited questions over the selection process, given Perera’s strong domestic form, including his victory at the Sri Lanka Golf November Ranking Tournament, which served as the official selection trial.
