COLOMBO, May 9 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s rising swimming star MF Muhammad of Zahira College produced another stunning performance by smashing his own 200m breaststroke national record on Day Two of the three-day Selection Trial for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, currently underway at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex.
The 17-year-old sensation clocked an impressive 2:21.61 to erase his previous national mark of 2:22.41 set last year, continuing a sensational run after rewriting the 50m breaststroke national record on the opening day of the championship organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union.
Muhammad, who trains under Matthew Abeysinghe at Killer Whale Aquatics, improved his previous 200m breaststroke national record by 0.80 seconds with another dominant display in Colombo.
The talented breaststroke specialist had already made headlines on Day One after breaking the long-standing 50m breaststroke national record of 29.24 seconds held by Kiran Jasinghe since 2023. Muhammad touched the wall in a brilliant 29.03 seconds to establish a new national benchmark.
Muhammad also came agonisingly close to another national record when he clocked 54.89 seconds in the 100m butterfly event, narrowly missing the decade-old national mark of 54.33 seconds set by double Olympian Abeysinghe in 2016.
The back-to-back record-breaking performances have further confirmed Muhammad as one of Sri Lanka’s brightest young swimming prospects ahead of future international competitions.
