COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, April 24, 2025 (ePRESS) – Asian International School (AIS), the pioneer international school in Sri Lanka to promote rowing, added another proud chapter to its remarkable rowing history when young Sonal Tranchell won the Boys’ Under-14 Single Sculls Championship at the Opening Regatta, held recently at the Colombo Rowing Club.

Competing against the best young talent in Colombo, Sonal powered through the 500-metre race with impressive skill and determination, clocking a time of 2 minutes and 6 seconds to bring home the title for AIS.

This regatta is one of the most important events in the local rowing calendar. Sonal’s victory is another achievement for AIS, a school that has long led the way in rowing among international schools in Sri Lanka.

Over the years, AIS has produced several top-class national-level rowers who have gone on to represent Sri Lanka and win medals at Asian championships, making the school a respected name in the country’s rowing community.

AIS Principal Harshana Perera was full of praise for Sonal’s achievement. “We are extremely proud of Sonal’s success. This is another fine moment in AIS’s rich rowing history. It proves that with hard work, commitment, and school spirit, young students can achieve great things. As the pioneer international school in rowing, we hope this inspires many more students and schools to embrace this wonderful sport.”

AIS Head of Sports Nihara Bagoos also shared her joy, adding, “Rowing is a demanding and disciplined sport. Sonal’s victory reflects not only his talent but also the strong sporting culture at AIS. We have produced top national rowers in the past and will continue to support and guide young athletes to achieve their sporting dreams.”

AIS continues to lead the way in promoting sports and giving students every opportunity to excel in both academics and sports, while proudly shaping future champions for Sri Lanka.
