Atapaththu Stars in Big Bash Clash

SYDNEY: Saturday: Sri Lanka Women’s captain Chamari Atapaththu led her team, Sydney Thunder Women, to a convincing nine-wicket victory over Perth Scorchers in the 44th match of the Women’s Big Bash League at Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Atapaththu showcased her all-round brilliance by blasting a remarkable 77 runs off just 53 balls, including three sixes and 10 fours, with an explosive strike rate of 145.28. Not only with the bat, but she also made a significant impact with her right-arm spin bowling, capturing two wickets for 23 runs in her quota of overs, which earned her the well-deserved Player of the Match award.

Chasing a target of 117, Sydney Thunder Women achieved the victory with 23 balls to spare, thanks to Atapaththu’s outstanding performance. After losing the first wicket early with only 10 runs on the board, skipper Heather Knight joined forces with Atapaththu, and the duo forged an unbeaten 110-run partnership for the second wicket, reaching the target in 16.1 overs.

This resounding win has propelled Sydney Thunder Women to accumulate 15 points in 11 matches, with seven wins and three losses, securing the second spot in the eight-team points table. The team’s strong position reflects their excellent form and performance in the Women’s Big Bash League.

Sri Lanka Women’s captain, Chamari Atapaththu, has been a standout player for Sydney Thunder Women’s  throughout the series, and her exceptional contributions with both bat and ball have played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
