Sri Lanka’s women’s cricket captain, Chamari Athapaththu, has been honored as the Player of the Tournament at the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia. Representing the Sydney Thunder, Athapaththu’s exceptional performance, which included an impressive 17 sixes, earned her the prestigious title.
Athapaththu showcased her cricketing prowess throughout the WBBL, amassing 511 runs at an impressive average of 42.58 and also contributing with 9 wickets. Her remarkable achievements include becoming the first Sri Lankan women’s cricketer to surpass a thousand runs in the BPL series.
Expressing her joy, Athapaththu stated, “I am very happy to receive the Player of the Series award. I am highly satisfied with my personal performances in this WBBL.” Additionally, a dedicated seating zone was named “Chamari Bay” in recognition of the Sri Lankan skipper’s cricketing excellence, making her the first Sri Lankan player to receive this honor.
The dynamic left-handed opening batter, hailing from Ibbagamuwa in the Kurunegala district, made her way to Colombo, and her outstanding performances paved the way for her entry into the National team. Athapaththu, known for her outstanding form throughout 2023, joined the Sydney Thunder as a replacement player, marking her fourth overseas stint in the WBBL.
Athapaththu first entered the WBBL scene in 2017 with the Melbourne Renegades before switching to the Perth Scorchers in WBBL|7. Following her success in the WBBL, she is expected to participate in the New Zealand Premier League.
