COLOMBO, June 24 (ePRESS) – Sri Lanka’s search for the next generation of batting talent may have uncovered a new contender after 22-year-old left-hander Kusal Wijethunga produced a match-defining 151 to become the leading run-scorer at the end of the opening week of the Major Clubs Under-23 Cricket Tournament.

Representing Burgher Recreation Club (BRC), Wijethunga’s superb innings powered his team to an imposing 300 for 5 and immediately placed him among the tournament’s standout performers. More importantly, the knock showcased the qualities of a batsman capable of progressing to higher levels of the game.

The stylish left-hander displayed a blend of sound technique, patience and controlled aggression throughout his innings. Blessed with excellent footwork and a strong cricketing brain, he handled both pace and spin with confidence, finding gaps with ease and rotating the strike intelligently. His elegant cover drives, fluent cuts and well-timed strokes through the off side highlighted a player with both class and composure.

What impressed observers most was his ability to build a long innings. Rather than relying solely on attacking shots, Wijethunga showed the temperament to absorb pressure, construct partnerships and accelerate when opportunities arose — qualities often associated with accomplished professional batsmen.

The innings was another milestone in a cricket journey that began at Trinity College, Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s most respected cricketing schools. During a highly successful school career, Wijethunga earned the coveted Trinity Lion and played a key role in Trinity’s historic 2023 campaign when the school emerged as Joint League Champions and One-Day Champions.

Now continuing his development under BRC Head Coach Janudika Sriyapala, the young batsman appears ready to take the next step in his career. His performances have already begun attracting attention within domestic cricket circles, with many viewing him as a player capable of making a significant impact in the years ahead.

Sri Lanka cricket has always thrived on the emergence of gifted young batsmen, and Wijethunga’s explosive start to the Under-23 season has placed him firmly in that conversation. While it is still early days, his ability to combine technical excellence with maturity beyond his years suggests that he could become one of the country’s most exciting batting prospects.

If his current form continues, Kusal Wijethunga may not remain a promising young player for long. He could soon become a name that Sri Lankan cricket fans hear far more often at the highest level.
